Carbonyl Compounds

In aldehydes, the carbonyl group is attached to another carbon and in ketones, it is attached to two carbons

The Carbonyl group, C=O is found in aldehydes and ketones such as ethanal, propanone. The aldehydes are named by replacing the 'e' of alkanes (with same number of carbons) to 'al'. In ketones, 'e' is replaced by 'one'The carbonyl group

The carbonyl group of these compounds are polar and smaller the molecule, the more miscible it is with water as they can form hydrogen bonds with water.
